Brok and Sindri: God of War Ragnarok

Let’s to a closer look at who Brok and Sindri are.

*Spoiler Alert- If you haven’t played God of War: Ragnarok, There are spoilers ahead*.

Norse Mythology

Brok (also known as Brokkr), and Sindri ( also known as Eltri) are well known in Norse history for being the dwarven brothers who created famous magical weapons for the Norse gods. In Norse Mythology, dwarves were well known for being skilled blacksmiths. Prime examples of their creation are; Weapons such as Mjolnir, Thor’s hammer, and Draupnir, and Odin’s ring.

According to the Norse legends, Brok and Sindri made a bet with Loki that they would not be able to match the craftsmanship of other popular weaponry in Asgard. The items Loki referred to were: Sif’s hair, Freyr’s ship skidbladnir, and Odin’s spear Gungnir, made by the Sons of Ivaldi.

The dwarven brother took Loki’s bet seriously and quickly got to work. Sindri worked the furnace while Brok worked the bellows. While the pair worked, there were many irritations and distractions. Brok for example was repeatedly stung by a fly while at work. They believed this was Loki trying to make them fail.

Despite this, in the end, Sindri and Brok succeeded in creating the golden boar Gullinbursti, Odin’s ring Draupnir, and Mjolnir, proving to Loki that they were worthy of being named the best blacksmith across the nine realms.

Here’s a short detailed video of the Norse History of Brok and Sindri.

Brok and Sindri in God of War

In God of War, like in Norse mythology, both brothers are dwarves, but Brok has a distinct difference. His skin is blue. This may have been a God of War: Ragnarok Easter egg referencing the Frost Giants from the Thor movies

Brok is voiced by Robert Craighead, and Sindri is voiced by Adam Harrington. In earlier versions of God of War, the dwarves feature as mere blacksmiths and feel as if they are simply side characters. But as the Ragnarok story progresses, there is quite a bit of character development and we learn that they play a vital role in the storyline.

Before God of War (2018) the brothers created Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. Horrified at how Thor used the hammer, they created Kratos’s favorite weapon, the Leviathan Axe. The Axe was initially made for Atreus’s mother but passed to Kratos when she died.

While creating the Axe, Brok was bitten by a spider and died. To save his brother Sindri traveled to the Lake of Souls and dived into the black water to stop his brother’s soul from passing on. Shortly after this, the two brothers parted ways due to multiple fights and a difference in viewpoints, though not much is explained about this. It’s assumed that Brok did not want Sindri to interfere with his death. Essentially they were able to work together.

It was during God of War (2018), when Kratos and Atreus first meet Sindri on the foothills of Midgards mountains. At the time, Sindri was repairing the Sky Mover. Sindri quickly notices the Leviathan Axe and asks Kratos where he got it from. Atreus informs him that Laufey, his mother, gave it to Kratos before she died.

Throughout the God of War Norse series, Sindri and Brok feature often. Their role was to add improvements to the Leviathan Axe, though they do add a great sense of humor to the game. Sindri plays a timid, anxious, and germaphobe. Brok plays the harsher brother, who often makes crude jokes and swears.

In God of War: Ragnarok, Brok allows Kratos and Atreus to hide in his workshop from Odin. Unfortunately, it was Odin disguised as the Norse God of War. Odin reveals himself and kills Brok. Brok’s death forces Sindri back into the game where Sindri agrees to get the dwarves to help in the attack on Asgard. He withdraws his willingness to help due to not wanting to spill more dwarven blood. Instead, he arrives alone and uses a sonic device that destroys Aesirs’ ballistas the only weapons that could stop Surtur.

In the end, Sindri appears again after Atreus has captured Odin’s soul in a marble. He sakes the marble and destroys what is left of Odin himself as revenge for him killing Brok. Sindri is last seen at Broks funeral, where he rejects Kratos condolences and disappears between realms.
