Runic attacks are the special attacks that Kratos can use in each of his weapons. They are perfect for getting out of tight spots and for dealing with multiple enemies. In this article, we are going to discuss some of the best runic attacks for each weapon and give you some insight on how and when to use them.

The Best Runic Attacks

Here’s a short list of the best Runic attacks for your main weapons in God of War Ragnarok.

WeaponRunic attackEffect
Leviathan AxeBreath of Thamur ( Heavy )Causes heavy frost damage on a large number of enemies.
Blades of ChaosTame the beast ( Heavy )Effective from a distance and causes heavy fire damage to multiple enemies.
Draupnir SpearArtillery of The Ancients ( Heavy )Impact provides damage to multiple enemies with explosive damage after impact.

Leviathan Axe Runic Attacks

The Leviathan Axe is the weapon you will use the majority of the time in God of War Ragnarok, and is used in almost every one of the best GoW builds. The three best runic attacks for the Leviathan Axe are by far the Njord’s Tempest ( Light attack ), Leviathans Roar ( heavy attack ), and the Breath of Thamur ( Heavy attack ).

Breath of Thamur ( heavy attack )

The runic attack is extremely powerful and works for multiple enemies at a time. Not to mention it also looks epic! Kratos will grab his axe with both hands and raise it above his head. A storm will surround Kratos dealing frost damage to everyone it touches while making Kratos invulnerable to any attacks.

The Breath of Thamur is extremely effective if you are being overwhelmed by enemies but it does have a downside. Its cooling time is around 290 seconds making it an attack that can only be used once in each fight.

So when you use it, make sure you choose a time that will inflict damage on as many enemies as possible. It can be found in a chest under the Raven Tree in Niflheim.

Leviathans Roar ( Heavy )

Leviathan Runic Attacks

This runic attack is perfect for dealing heavy damage to small groups or individual enemies. You can also attack enemies from a distance which is a significant advantage of this attack. When you use the Leviathan Roar, Kratos throws the axe with all of his strength.

On impact with an enemy, it will deal heavy frost damage on the enemy it hit and those close to them. When you fully upgrade this attack, you will also inflict stun on those you use it. This attack is best used from a distance. You can find this runic attack in a legendary chest hidden in Freyr’s camp.

Njorns’s Tempest ( Light attack )

Njorns’s Tempest Runic Attack

For a light attack, this runic attack deals significant damage. If you find yourself facing several enemies or a boss and you are looking to stun and inflict some quick damage, then use this attack.

When you use the Njorn’s Tempest Kratos will swing his axe incredibly fast-hitting all enemies in his way and inflicting stun and frost damage on all enemies. You can find this ability in a chest in Althjof’s Rig.

Blades of Chaos Runic Attacks

A fan favorite from the start of the series, the Blades of Chaos have some powerful runic attacks. The best runic attacks we would suggest for this weapon are the Tame the Beast ( heavy attack ), Rampage of the Furies ( Light Attack ), and Atlas Eruption ( Heavy Attack ).

Tame the Beast ( Heavy Attack )

Tame the Beast is definitely a very effective attack. It allows you to attack your enemies from a distance while causing heavy damage, stun and burn damage. When you use this skill, Kratos will use his Blades of Chaos to whip and slash at nearby enemies.

Tame the beast does have a cooldown that is half that of the Breath of Thamur attack. The cooldown is roughly 135 seconds. This should allow you to use this runic attack at least two to three times in a battle. This Runic attack can also be found in Helheim in another legendary chest.

Atlas Eruption ( Heavy attack )

This attack doesn’t just sound cool but is powerful and perfect when enemies surround you. When you activate this runic attack, Kratos becomes enraged and slams his blades into the ground. The impact causes a massive explosion which causes fire and explosive damage to anyone close.

When fully upgrading this attack, you can do multiple smashes by pressing R2, increasing the damage you deal to enemies. Another bonus is that this attack knocks your enemies back, giving you more breathing space if your health is low. This Runic attack can be found on the top floor of the Forge on a ledge in a legendary chest.

Rampage of the Furies ( Light Attack )

If you want to deal significant damage while also making space between you and your enemies, then this is the right runic attack to use. With the Rampage of the Furies attack, Kratos unleashes a combination of attacks with his blades of chaos, forcing your enemies back and dealing burn damage on every hit. You can find this Runic ability in the Vanir Shrine in a legendary chest.

Draupnir Spear Runic Attacks

The Draupnir Spear is a weapon you get later in God of War Ragnarok and is a powerful additive to your collection. The best Runic attacks for the Draupnir Spear are the Artillery of the Ancients ( Heavy Attack), the Vindsvalr’s Windstorm ( Heavy Attack ), and the Thrust of A Thousand Soldiers ( light attack )

Artillery of the Ancients ( Heavy Attack ).

Artillery of the Ancients Runic Attacks

This attack makes for the perfect attack when dealing loads of damage to multiple enemies. When you use the Artillery of the Ancients, Kratos throws the spear into the air. In the air, the spear will multiply and come down with loads of spears inflicting tons of damage on impact. The massacre doesn’t stop there, though.

You can also detonate all the spears that have landed by pressing the triangle. This will inflict even more damage on your enemies. With a cooldown time of 97 seconds, you can use this attack a few times if you have a drawn-out battle.

You will find this ability after you defeat the Dreki bosses in the Creatures of Prophecy mission. The runic attack will be among their loot once you defeat them.

Vindsvalr’s Windstorm ( Heavy Attack )

Vindsvalr’s Windstorm destroys your enemies by dealing large amounts of physical and stun damage. This attack is also perfect for dealing with several enemies at the same time. The attack creates cyclones that deal stun and physical damage to anyone who touches them.

As you upgrade this attack, you increase the number of cyclones you create and their duration. You can find this ability when you defeat the Flame Phantom Boss. As you defeat the boss, look at the leftover loot, and Vindsvalr’s Windstorm should be there.

Thrust of A Thousand Soldiers ( Light Attack )

Thrust of A Thousand Soldiers is a light attack but don’t be fooled; it deals loads of physical damage and can be used often because of its low cooldown time. When you use this attack, Kratos will rapidly attack surrounding enemies by stabbing them with the spear. As you upgrade the attack, its duration and damage dealt increases.

This runic attack can be found in a legendary chest found in Helheim. After fighting the Hel-traveller, go through the gate and follow the right-side route until you find a gold crack in the wall. Break the wall and on your left should be the chest with the ability hidden in it.
